What is the difference between photochromic and Transition?

Photochromic Lenses:
These lenses automatically darken to provide vision protection when exposed to UV light. They adjust their tint based on lighting conditions, making them suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

Transition Lenses:
This term is often used interchangeably with photochromic lenses, particularly referring to the specific brand "Transitions." These lenses also darken in sunlight but may have unique features, such as faster activation and improved clarity.

Visit Solos' Lens Guide for more information.

What is the difference between Transition Gen 8 and Transition Xtractive lenses?

Transitions Gen 8 and Transitions Xtractive lenses are both advanced photochromic lenses designed to adapt to changing light conditions, but they have distinct features tailored for different needs.

Transitions Gen 8:
These lenses are engineered to provide rapid activation and fade-back in a variety of lighting situations. They offer excellent clarity and performance indoors, while dimming effectively in bright sunlight outdoors. Gen 8 lenses are ideal for everyday use, providing a balance between comfort indoor comfort and outdoor protection.

Transitions Xtractive:
Xtractive lenses are designed for better performance in brighter outdoor conditions. Not only are they darker than Gen 8 lenses in direct sunlight, they also provide additional protection from harmful UV rays and blue light. Even inside your car, Xtractive lenses remain active as long as there is UV exposure, making them a great choice for those who spend long time on driving or outdoor activities.

How do the Sunfilter™ Photochromic lenses work in different lighting conditions?

Sunfilter™ lenses utilize advanced photochromic dyes that react to UV light (specifically UV-A radiation) to activate its tint. Under optimal conditions, such as bright midday sun, the lenses reduce light transmission to approximately 12.5%–13.3%, effectively blocking nearly 87% of incoming light and appearing a dark gray tint ideal for bright outdoor environment.

However, lens performance may vary under some circumstances. For example, during periods of lower UV intensity, such as in the evening or on cloudy days, the lens may appear lighter in color, even though it continues to react to any available UV light.

Do polarized lenses also darken under UV light?

No, polarized lenses themselves do not darken. They are designed to reduce glare and not change hue depending on light conditions. Visit Solos' Lens Guide for more information: https://solosglasses.com/pages/lens
